Being an "old" couple already (14yrs+ n counting), I'd say Alan n I r so accustomed to each other that sometimes we stop being cordial to each other. That's not to say we shout or r rude to each other, but we talk to each other in a tone that we would only use on each other. It's not the polite tone u use on colleagues or strangers, not the respectful tone u use on parents or elders, not the friendly tone u use on friends. I call it a "comfy" tone that is used for my other half only. To others listening, it could sound rude. But to us, it's normal. To Ashley, it sounds like we r quarrelling. And what does my little darling do to cool things off? She SINGS or SAY "AHHHHHH" very loudly to drown out our voices. Sometimes, Alan n I r so tickled by her "peace-making"efforts that we purposely ignore her n continue our conversation. And she gets so worked up that she'd bump up her volume. She may be little, but she's got my voice. Hah!
